The Adelaide Motorplex PDF Print E-mail

I attended the rally on Sunday 23rd August 2009 held at the Masonic Centre, Port Adelaide starting at 2pm and ending about 4pm.  So many people attended in support of this that they not only spilled out into the street but the police had to close off the adjacent roadway to accommodate everyone!

Many serious issues arose from that meeting, highlights being:

• Motorplex is a consortium of private companies who are NOT asking for government funding for this venture.
• This Rann government has continually stonewalled the proposal, forever giving different excuses why they cannot go ahead with it for about 2 years.
• There is no appropriate motor sport complex in SA.
• This Rann government has effectively placed a media ban on Motorplex’s campaign from the onset.
• The Rann government has labeled all motoring enthusiasts as hoons by association to the very few that do!
• The Rann government is willing to spend public money on other things, such as the horse racing track at Morphetville, but Motorplex is PRIVATELY funded and yet cannot get the go ahead.
• It would be a significant boost to the economy of SA by way of supporting businesses in auto manufacturing, employment directly and indirectly, the hospitality and tourism industries, et al.
• It will provide an opportunity for South Australia to advance in the auto technology stakes.
• It will support our only remaining car manufacturing industry.
• It will provide resources available for training and driver education.
• The driver education and facility will provide a readily available outlet for those who wish to test out themselves and their vehicles in a safe environment.
• The organizations supporting, funding and seeking the Motorplex do not support bad driving or illegal road use.

FREE Australia Party can only support anything that improves South Australia, that gives the people and the citizens of South Australia what they want, and in particular a project like this that will put South Australia on the global automotive map given the mooted proposal.

People who oppose this do not need to be concerned.  It could easily be likened to airing a program on TV where some people find it offensive – they don’t have to switch the TV on do they? In this case, they will not be forced to visit events staged at the Motorplex..

Invitations were sent to all government players who all declined to attend, all Liberal invitees also declined except for one Mark Goldsworthy MP who gave the assurance that the Liberals were “listening and understand” the issues. As pointed out by one member of the audience, that was not a prelude to action or even support.

I had a brief moment to address the audience as spokesperson for FREE, ie, about 2 minutes, and told them that Freedom Rights Environment and Education fitted in with what I had heard from all speakers today.  In that regard, we will fight for them as a political party and that we will support this project. We will make it an election issue.

One most elucidating speaker amongst others was a former Northern Territory Police senior superintendent Mark Jeffs, as he described himself “probably the highest ranking hoon in Australia”, where he explained the highly successful “Beat the Heat” program that he set up in the NT.

Similar programs based on the original NT idea have been implemented by various other states, but most have since been shut down for one reason or another. 

Obviously, one question that was on everyone’s mind was why this Rann government puts taxpayers money into the Clipsal 500 and the Classic Car Rally when here is a privately funded enterprise – NO taxpayer money – that cannot get off the ground?  There was no Labor politician available to answer this, despite being invited.

My opinion is that this type of project is one that must be supported by the government in the manner that has been proposed. Not only supported, but encouraged if this state is to go ahead.
